October is national poetry month in Great Britain. Other countries celebrate in different months. Let’s share this one throughout the world with a whimsical poem from an American poet who lost his life in France during World War I.
Join me, please, in celebrating harmony …in poets, people, and countries.
Enjoy!

Tributes to the trees really. Give fruit; shelter from the sun; causes rain; helps us in many ways but is finally cut. What a way to suffer!

I remember my father loving this poem and he was not a literary fellow. I used to teach this poem to my children for many reasons: rhymes, ESL, choral speaking…

And to think Kilmer only planned on crafting a simple little poem. Wow!

They are also home to squirrels. Yesterday, as I walked back from the library, I saw a young man chasing a squirrel. I seemed the squirrel saw it as a game. It was almost like a dog and boy playing as they went around the tree first one way and then the other. Finally, the squirrel went up the tree far enough that he could not be reached and looked back down.

I love trees. My family and I propagate indigenous trees by the thousands and distribute to denuded mountains and countryside.

I don’t like rules. Metaphors may be mixed, but in this poem I am transfixed. Love nature, love trees, love poetry. Thanks for the reminder. Love, David.

Thanks for checking out my blog and following! This poem makes me smile too… it has always been held up as an example of unskillfully mixed metaphors in many poetry classes I’ve taken ! 🙂 But in spite of that- it still makes me smile- Namaste!

“…unskillfully mixed metaphors,” yes, I’ve heard that over and over as well. I’m perplexed though, why have millions loved and appreciated this simple, tranquil, and beautiful excuse for poem. (my bit of sarcasm for the month) 😉 Thank you. ~Paul

Hello Paul, This is one of my very favourite poems by an amazing poet. I adore Joyce Kilmer’s works and am happy to have found an old poetry book with works he created along with his wife as well. The lovely artwork you have here is perfect to go with this treasured poem. Thank you so much for sharing! Cheers, Gina
